Attractions and Events

There is always lots to see and and do in the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen and surrounding areas. Below is a listing of some fun and exciting area attractions and events.

Belmont Lake Brewery

The Belmont Lake Brewery is a small craft brewery located on the shores of the beautiful Belmont Lake. The owners moved here from England in 2011 with a brewery in their shipping container and a vision of brewing traditional English beer with a Canadian twist. Five years later their dreams are being fulfilled. Their building is sympathetic to the environment, using local timber for the board and battening. Inserted in the interior walls are a few Victorian stained glass panels which also originated from England.  Be sure to stop and sample their beer and enjoy a tour of the brewery.

Canadian Canoe Musuem

The Canadian Canoe Museum has large collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercrafts. They are an engaging, family-friendly museum with more than 100 canoes and kayaks on display. Visitors will enjoy interactive, hands-on galleries, a scavenger hunt, model canoe building and puppet theatre for children.  They are located at 910 Monaghan Road in Peterborough and open seven days a week.

The Gut Conservation Area 

The Gut Conservation Area is located just north of our Township and is a must see.  The "Gut" is a large gorge that the Crowe River flows through for about 230 meters.  The Conservation area is approximately 400 acres that has a parking lot, walking trails, look-out area and a stairway down to the gorge.

Havelock Farmer and Artisian Market

The Market will run every Friday running until Thanksgiving Weekend. Start date can be found on their website. Located on Highway 7 with lots of parking. Please visit www.havelockmarket.ca for further information. 

Indian River Reptile Zoo

The Indian River Reptile Zoo provides visitors with the opportunity to view over 200 reptiles in climate controlled conditions. Each enclosure presents reptiles in their natural setting and features specific information about each species.  These animals act as ambassadors, allowing visitors to safely get close to reptiles that they would not likely see in the wild.  The reptile zoo is located at 2206 County Rd 38, Indian River between Havelock and Peterborough.

Lang Pioneer Village

Since 1967, it has been the mission of Lang Pioneer Village to preserve and authentically recreate the history of Peterborough County and strive to provide visitors with an accurate and interactive view of the life of a 19^th century settler in rural Ontario.  Costumed interpreters tell the pioneer story as they demonstrate traditional chores, trades and pastimes. Each day they bring history to life in an engaging way as they welcome you into their homes and businesses.

Mathison Property

The Mathison Property is a 250 acre natural area of scenic forests and wetlands located north of the Village of Havelock. It has 1.6 kilometers of multiuse trails for walking, biking and ATV/Snowmobiling and 1.1 kilometers of walking only trails. This property was graciously donated to the Township by John Mathison in 2001 for conservation, education and recreation purposes.  View map of the property.

Norwood Fair

If great fall fairs are among your favourite places, make a point to see the Norwood Fall Fair, either as a first-timer or as a regular visitor.  The fair takes place on Thanksgiving weekend each year and has operated for more than 140 years.  This is one of the largest fairs in the area and is sure to be fun for the whole family.

Peterborough Lift Lock

The Peterborough Lift Lock is one of only two hydraulic lift locks on the Trent Severn Waterway, Lock 21 is the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world. Opened on July 9, 1904, it leaves a visible and lasting impact on Peterborough's landscape.  The Peterborough Lift Lock Visitor Centre is located next to the lock. At the Visitor Centre, visitors can find public washrooms, as well as exhibits and films.

Peterborough Musicfest

Every year for two months during the summer, Peterborough Musicfest hosts 17 free concerts in the heart of Peterborough at Del Crary Park.  Popular bands and entertainers such as Carly Rae Jepsen, Tegan and Sara, Emerson Drive, Randy Bachman, and Chad Brownlee have graced the Fred Anderson Stage at Del Crary Park. Del Crary Park is located on the shores of picturesque Little Lake in Peterborough. Peterborough Musicfest attracts approximately 125,000 attendees each year.

Petroglyphs Provincial Park

The Petroglyphs Provincial Park is the site of the largest known concentration of Aboriginal rock carvings (petroglyphs) in Canada, depicting turtles, snakes, birds, humans and more; this sacred site is known as "The Teaching Rocks".  The Petroglyphs Provincial Park is located just north of the Township on Northey's Bay Road.

Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge

The Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge is located within Ferris Provincial Park and is a great destination for an easy hike and picturesque views. This great, family-oriented natural adventure hovers 30 feet above the Ranney Gorge just south of the falls. As you make your way across the 300-foot-long bridge, you will feel it sway slightly below your feet.  This is located in Campbellford just south of the Township. 

Riverview Park and Zoo

The Riverview Park and Zoo is located just north of downtown Peterborough.  The zoo features 27 exhibits, with over 48 species, including Yak, Camel, Wallaby, Emu, Macaw, Squirrel Monkey, Cougar, Plated Lizard, Meerkat and more. The park covers 55.5 acres and is the largest and most diversified playground in the city. It also features equipment for physically-challenged children. With a splash pad, frisbee golf course, walking trails, a miniature train ride and beautiful gardens, they have something for everyone.
